In modern political theory the concept of security was crucial for providing a rational foundation of the construction of political order and for turning power into an instrument for securing the life and interests of the subjects. At the same time, however, the discourses and practices concerning security have been the basis for governing individuals and populations. Starting from Foucault's analysis of governmentality, the essay explores the link between security and the practices of government, and its contemporary transformations.
