The article will present the results of ethnographic research conducted in two elderly centres in 2010 in a region of Northern Italy. The characteristics of social work will be revealed. Focus will be placed on the new roles and strategies employed to attract the elderly to social services as well as the creativity and values guiding the activity of social workers.
