This text presents a fragment of the genealogy of emergency powers in western politicaltheory. It tries to locate the under-studied chapter of Rousseau's Social Contracton dictatorship in the sequence that goes from Machiavelli to Carl Schmitt. The basicsuggestion is that Rousseau disentangles the institution from the traditional structureof the mixed constitution (the Aristotelian memigmene politeia) making it availablefor modern democracy.
