The paper analyzes different recent patterns of legal personification of water bodies. These strategies were applied in remote times, both in Roman Law and in the Middle Ages. They powerfully return now, as a new solution to overcome the difficulties in implementing an effective ecological public order. The features of most recent judicial, legislative and constitutional systems bestowing to water bodies a legal-person status are here examined in the framework of the tendency to an ecological interpretation of the legal system.
