A suspicious explosion of ecological activism has invaded the art world. Museums and major galleries are making this commitment an important aspect of their policy. Last year, the Tate Gallery, siding against intensive fish farming, banned salmon from its restaurant’s menu in connection with the exhibition Salmon: a Red Herring by the Cooking Sections duo. Galleries are now organized and directed more as financial holding companies than as cultural spaces for the discussion and promotion of ideas. Can art lead an attack on the economic value of works and drag the present into the future?
