The present contribution addresses the integration of the theme of sport into the texts of Vatican II. It will do so by focusing on the way in which the theme was addressed by the Council Fathers during the preparation, and the brief period, of the council (1959-1965) on the basis of the nearly hundred references to sport in the authorized Acta et Documenta and the Acta Synodalia, thus drawing a picture of its appearance in the preparatory and conciliar phases respectively, and its eventual integration in Gaudium et spes 61.
