An exploration of certain theatrical forms, which, quintessentially, efface the traditional notion of sense and thereby plunge the spectator into what are thus dubbed the 'pure forms' of the stage. Distanced, as such, from both representational textuality and conventional performativity alike, one is confronted with designifying manifestations, absent of any (perceptible) semiotic function. The new paradigm thus birthed invokes a host of enigmas, which it seeks not (and is ill-conceived) to resolve. Whence one is led to ponder: what might be deduced from theatre once its construction is purposefully devoid of meaning (if, in fact, any such extraction is viable). To the extent that the stage or performance arena no longer constitutes, then, but a site of simulation (non-textual and non-conventional), the experience of the 'receiver' (intended audience of observers) is irrevocably metamorphosed into that of explicitly scattered and decontextualized 'real-life moments' - in their own way obstensibly shallow and evanescent. Still, much contemporary theater re-defines, re-invents and reinscribes itself as a newborn form of ludic experimentation, its instrumentalized effects of presence, absence and simulation offering observers virtual elements of a universe of otherness.
