Abstract

This paper is the result of a study made by the author in Spain, thanks to an agreement between Spanish and Italian universities: The “Escuela Superior de Ingenieros Industriales”, Universidad de Valladolid, and the “Università Carlo Cattaneo - Liuc”, Castellanza (Varese). The paper contains the results of a comparison between two logistics systems, performed by several visits to two automotive factories, both located in Valladolid (Spain): FASA – RENAULT, cars production, and IVECO – PEGASO, vans production. The reflections and findings of this study are presented in the following chapters. For different reasons we have focused our attention on logistics in automotive industry instead of any other fields in the industry. In terms of strategic and operative decisions no other industrial world is affected so much by influential factors as the automotive world. Consumer preferences determine the current styles, reliability, and performance standards of vehicles. Government, trade, safety, and environmental regulations establish incentives and requirements for modernization and change in design or production. Competitive rivalries and corporate strategies provide equally important impetus for research, design innovations, and changes in the manufacturing process. All automakers are constantly under pressure to identify consumer preferences, national biases, and new market segments where they can sell vehicles and gain market share. Their ability to be flexible enough to quickly respond to all these pressures determines their future in the industry. The implications of these factors are vast and propagate along the supply chain of the automakers. In order to carry out this study, it seemed a good method to introduce the analysis of the logistics systems of the two factories separately (chapters 2 and 3 ). Of course, logistics that have been described quite often are related not just to a single factory, but to the logistics organization of the firm in general in both Renault and Iveco. The introduction and chapter 1 try first to present what logistics is and then focus the attention on main issues of logistics that seemed appropriate to be included in the study, considering that logistics is a rather wide subject and wandering about minor aspects mightn't have been relevant. The last chapter consists of a comparison between the two systems considering every aspect analyzed in previous chapters.
