In the ever-evolving landscape of digital platforms, there exists a significant gap in our understanding of the dynamics that govern business-to-business (B2B) platforms, particularly in the dynamics that characterize the establishment of a platform and how a platform owner should interact with different users to lock them in. Existing literature predominantly focuses on business-to-consumer (B2C) platforms, leaving the nuances of B2B platforms largely unexplored, which this thesis aims to explore. After proposing a literature review in the area of platforms, ecosystems and in the area of organizations' behaviors, we propose our own conceptualization between dynamics involved on a B2C platform and on an IIoT (as a B2B platform) to best highlight this gap. We present a single case study with multiple sources that delves into the intriguing story of Insights Hub (previously known as Mindsphere) a pivotal component of Siemens's strategy. This platform not only thrived as a direct competitor to an incumbent in the industry that failed through the years but also implemented a unique strategy that involved the creation of two interconnected ecosystems – one residing within the platform itself and another externally but closely related. This case study unveils the intricate decision-making processes and organizational structures that enabled Siemens to navigate the competitive landscape and succeed in an environment where others failed. The findings of this research serve to highlight critical managerial implications and make a valuable contribution to the existing literature on industrial digital platforms.
