Abstract

As the subject of my thesis, the ADP logistics company commissioned me to optimize the distribution routes for the delivery of newspapers and magazines to the various newsstands in the region. The distribution network supplies material to 215 active newsstands through 17 routes, where each route is managed by a specific van. I found it difficult to organize and update such large amounts of information while keeping an eye on what was relevant to the problem. The other problem encountered, was the unavailability of the keys for the deliveryman, due to company decisions. Through the use of two software’s called Postman and Tom-tom, I managed to find an efficient way to optimize the distribution order of each route, and therefore, to represent the essential values necessary to calculate the km saved, while satisfying the constraint of delivery time. In addition to having found a saving of 50583 km per year, I also calculated the CO2 savings that could result from the optimization carried out. Furthermore, I decided to analyse a hypothetical transition to electric vehicles to see the further savings it could bring regarding CO2 emissions. The results of this analysis were presented in three situations in which I compared the current situation of distribution, Diesel vehicles + Current order, with three possible alternatives: 1) Diesel vehicles + Optimized order, 2) Electric vehicles + Current order, and 3) Electric vehicles + Optimized order. The various simulations found that the first of the alternatives resulted in the least saving in terms of CO2, with 17376 kg of CO2 saved per year while the last two brought the greatest savings with 75857 and 80945 kg of CO2 saved per year. I decided to represent three different alternatives to give the company a margin of choice on what is most convenient, not only in terms of ecology but also in terms of investment costs. To conclude, in the end, I achieved the established goal by managing to find various solutions that could save the ADP company a significant amount of km and CO2 per year. As mentioned before, the presence of the keys is important for the implementation of this strategy, and it is up to the company to decide whether to solve the problem for future implementation.
