Abstract

This thesis discusses the issues inherent within blockchain technology used as an auxiliary for managing a supply chain operating in an automotive manufacturing industry. Due to the strong growth that the technology has experienced in recent years and the difficulties encountered by industries in managing supply chains, blockchain technology, thanks particularly to its main features turns out to be an excellent aid for managing and avoiding problems along the supply chain. The first part of the paper explains in detail the IT architecture, and all the main features of the technology with a brief additional analysis of the success experienced in decentralized finance. Subsequent chapters begin to deal in detail with the supply chain, providing a comprehensive definition of the industry, considering all the relevant factors within it. Then it takes over the application model of blockchain technology in the supply chain by introducing the application of it in the industrial section of automotive production, specifying issues related to assembly and distribution, whose characteristics have emerged as the most complex to manage. The third chapter of the paper provides detailed explanations of the use of the technology in logistics and production management processes, concentrated in the automotive manufacturing industry. In this section, weaknesses in supply chain management are highlighted, with practical examples of how indeed blockchain can prove a great support by going to cover and ensure that some mistakes cannot be made. Finally, in the last chapter of the paper, factors for future use and growth are considered. As a matter of fact, relevant factors inherent in the worldwide adoption of the technology are highlighted, with empirical data showing that it is a fast-growing innovative technology. Additionally, considering the characteristics that have emerged in the previous chapters, and the data provided through observations in industries operating in different sectors, it stands to all intents and purposes as an excellent starting point for solving problems, which in the automobile manufacturing industry nowadays turns out to be a problem that leads to large losses in turnover year after year.
