Abstract

Technological development, in recent decades, has led to many changes in the world and companies. It has changed the way people interact, allowing new technologies the automation of entire departments of companies and giving the possibility to create increasingly powerful and precise analysis software, bringing many benefits to the most disparate areas. However, this development brings an ever-increasing complexity which affects the systems that need to be analyzed. One of the most successful techniques to analyse and represent complex systems is Agent-based modelling. It has seen an increased use in social sciences, marketing, chemistry and physics. Despite the large number of models already developed in these areas, there is scarce scientific literature that has studied this methodology applied to the internal contexts of organizational structures. In particular in the study of collaborative and non-collaborative interactions between workers for the execution of generic tasks. The thesis aims to broaden the fields of application of this methodology to the internal dynamics of organizations. The objectives are to identify the areas of application of the ABM methodology and then analyze the characteristics and requirements necessary to apply it. It also aims to demonstrate the potential of this technique in the study of interactions in organizational structures through the development of an agent-based model, also analyzing how the characterizing variables affect the behaviour of interactions leading to different results. The results obtained show how this technique is effectively applicable to complex systems representing the internal dynamics of companies. The qualitative and quantitative analysis carried out also makes it possible to investigate the relationships between interactions and organizational structures, thus offering a useful tool to analyze the progress of the latter in the same.
