Abstract

Digital transformation has been in place for years and the supply chain has not been exempted from it. The more connected environment, based on the collaboration of people, processes and devices, leads to an increase in the efficiency and effectiveness of logistical-productive processes. However, despite these advantages, the risks involved in this change should not be underestimated. Malfunctions of information systems, lack of connectivity and attacks by external parties are just some of the new threats to companies. In particular, the scope of this research is to analyse the awareness and readiness of Italian companies in the consumer goods sector, where the number of cyber attacks has increased by 71% in 2016. The tool used is that of the questionnaire which, after an initial validation by various selected experts, has been used both for qualitative research, composed by on-site interviews, and for quantitative research, through online compilation. On- site interviews have always been made with Supply Chain Managers, CIOs and Managing Directors. Questionnaire respondents have been segmented as Supply Chain Managers (58%), CIOs (15%), Managing Directors (14%) and others (13%). In addition to the role of the respondent, answers have also been segmented according to the business’ turnover and, above all, the company’s role in its supply chain. The 112 total replies highlighted several peculiarities from the cyber risk point of view in the consumer goods sector. In particular, 2 of them are reported: • The perception of risk events, in terms of probability, is strongly related to their recent occurrence. The most feared in terms of impact is the malfunctioning of the management system, which affects not only the company in which the malfunction occurs, but also partners in the supply chain • A ranking with threat perception scores for certain categories of information has been established for each role in the supply chain. Invoices, logistical rates and discounts are the most important categories for Manufacturers, 3PL and Retailers respectively. Italian companies in the consumer goods sector have shown that they have taken a long road towards adapting to the management of new risks, in fact less than 2.8% say that they are not investing in mitigation initiatives. Many small companies, however, have not realized that this adjustment will become fundamental among supply chain partners. It is not absurd thinking that in the next few years companies will no longer want to rely on suppliers that will represent a weakness for the entire supply chain, making them vulnerable too.
