SUMMARY The thesis project is born from the necessity to understand how the fourth industrial revolution influenced the patenting activity of some multinational firms. The "Industry 4.0” revolution is a new tendency of the industrial automation to integrate new productive technologies, in order to improve the quality and quantity of manufacturing. Such technologies are object of legal protection, especially by using patents. The paper structure foresees, inside the first chapter, a description related to the general literature regarding the use of the knowledge as distinctive competence, the intellectual property, the patent and its characteristics at a normative level. In the second chapter, the so-called Patent Competitive Intelligence is explained; in other words, it is the entire set of searching and selection activities and analysis of strategic information related to patents. Inside this section, there is the detailed explanation of all the operations realized within the R&D departments of the companies, in order to get valuable data related to the target market and to the competition, in the field of intellectual property. The following chapter concerns the term Industry 4.0, the characteristics of the industrial revolution and all the relative enabling technologies, which will be fundamental for the research process. The next parts of the thesis regard, instead, the research and analysis of the patents owned by the multinationals examined inside this study. The patent research is fulfilled through "keywords" inherent to the enabling technologies of the industry 4.0, by using a software called Orbit Intelligence. The research goes from 1990 until today and, furthermore, China is not considered as priority country for the companies, because of linguistic and legal motivations. The patent data examination is realized, for the first portion, by using Microsoft Excel and, it includes various kinds of analysis regarding the information extracted via the database: a preliminary analysis and a more detailed secondary analysis. The following semantic analysis of patent data is fulfilled by using open source software like Vosviewer and Rstudio. Subsequently, the sixth chapter analyses the impact of the Industry 4.0 revolution on the patenting activity of the companies, by referring to the results emerged in the previous chapter. This section underlined a growing tendency of firms to invest in different enabling technologies of the new industrial revolution in order to be more competitive on the market. Lastly, there is the examination and discussion about the validity of the methodology used to research and analyse the patent information, and finally, the practical implications of this master research. RIASSUNTO Il progetto di tesi nasce dall’esigenza di capire in che modo la quarta rivoluzione industriale ha impattato sull’attività brevettuale di alcune aziende multinazionali. Il termine “Industria 4.0” indica una nuova tendenza dell’automazione industriale ad integrare nuove tecnologie produttive per migliorare qualità e quantità della manifattura di impresa. Queste tecnologie sono oggetto di protezione legale tramite specifici strumenti, uno su tutti il “brevetto”. La struttura dell’elaborato prevede, all’interno del primo capitolo, una descrizione relativa alla letteratura generale riguardante l’utilizzo della conoscenza come competenza distintiva, la proprietà intellettuale, il brevetto e le sue caratteristiche a livello normativo. Nel secondo capitolo viene disciplinata la cosiddetta Patent Competitive Intelligence; ovvero l’insieme delle attività di ricerca, selezione ed analisi di informazioni strategiche relative ai brevetti. All’interno di questa sezione è presente la spiegazione dettagliata di tutte le operazioni che vengono effettuate nei centri di ricerca e sviluppo delle aziende per ottenere e valorizzare dati relativi al mercato obiettivo ed alla concorrenza, in materia di proprietà intellettuale. Il seguente capitolo tratta il termine Industria 4.0, le caratteristiche della rivoluzione industriale e tutte le relative tecnologie abilitanti, che saranno fondamentali per il processo di ricerca. Le parti successive della tesi trattano, invece, la ricerca e l’analisi pratica dei brevetti di alcune multinazionali esaminate all’interno dell’elaborato. La ricerca dei brevetti viene effettuata per “parole chiave”, inerenti alle tecnologie abilitanti dell’Industria 4.0, utilizzando un software chiamato Orbit Intelligence. Il periodo di indagine va dal 1990 fino ad oggi ed inoltre, non viene presa in considerazione la Cina come nazione di priorità per le aziende, per motivi linguistici e legali. L’analisi pratica dei dati brevettuali è stata effettuata per una prima parte utilizzando Microsoft Excel e comprende diverse tipi di analisi delle informazioni brevettuali estrapolate dal database: un’analisi preliminare ed un’analisi secondaria più dettagliata. La successiva analisi semantica dei dati è stata effettuata con l’ausilio di software open source quali Vosviewer, Sci2 e Rstudio. Successivamente, il sesto capitolo analizza l’impatto della quarta rivoluzione industriale sull’attività brevettuale delle aziende facendo riferimento ai risultati emersi nelle precedenti analisi. Questa sezione sottolinea la crescente tendenza delle imprese di investire sulle tecnologie abilitanti della nuova rivoluzione industriale, in modo da essere più competitive sul mercato. Infine, viene analizzata e discussa la validità e l’efficacia del metodo utilizzato per la ricerca e la verifica delle informazioni brevettuali e, in ultimo, vengono sottolineate le implicazioni pratiche di questa tesi.
