Abstract

The aim of this work is to investigate and to analyze the evolution of a network and how its development process is carried out, in terms of organizational and managerial activities and in terms of successful networks compared to unsuccessful ones. In other words, this study wants to show how a strategic multipartner network should plan and manage activities in order to succeed (compared to unsuccessful). Strategic networks and the collaboration originated by them have been under study in both the academic and business worlds for a considerable time. Although much attention has been focused on this phenomenon by both academics and practitioners, a high percentage of networks still fails, companies should not compete against each other’s but, being partners in a network, they should compete against other networks. The end-consumer has to be always the main objective since “he” (the customer) is considers the network as “one entity or offering”. Therefore, this means that a poor performance of a member of the community could undermine the whole image of the network and, in the long period, it could even affect the competitiveness and the network performance. A qualitative approach based on multiple case studies allowed me to understand the development process of successful SME strategic networks. The present study therefore represents a noteworthy academic contribution to strategic multipartner network theory and practice. Therefore, the creation of a strategic network is one the most important managerial tasks in the knowledge economy that aims create tangible and intangible values with the use of knowledge.
