Abstract

Small and medium enterprises represent a key resource for the economy of a country, since they contribute to the creation of new jobs and an increase in the trade of goods and services. They represent about 97% of the business in the world and play a fundamental role in the recovery at the end of negative economic cycles. According to Kingston and Smith Report (2012), only 65% of SMEs reach their third year, while more than 55% of the total fails within the fifth year of life. One of the main factors behind this is the workforce. Employees are the people who work within the company, aiming to add value to products and services. They are human beings with their own problems and aspirations, and are therefore able to influence the performance of a company. In view of this, managing human resources is a complex but crucial challenge. The Centre of Employment, Competitiveness & Growth, which is part of the Research Department at University of Kent’s Business School, has prepared a survey that was answered by 229 SMEs operating in the UK. The aim was to collect data in order to analyse processes and practices adopted by SMEs. A significant portion of the survey investigates Human Resource Management, and so this is the topic the analysis will be based on. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the way in which SMEs in the UK manage human resources and to identify better practices that increase the chances of achieving success. To do this, statistical analysis will be performed using SPSS software.
