Abstract

Since Italian transportation is mainly based on the use of roads (almost 62,28% of tons/km), for logistic operators port efficiency plays a key role in surviving the competition in shipping business, as port organisations are labour-intensive and require a full utilisation of resources. (Tahar & Hussain, 2000) The present analysis fits into a wider framework, in which “Fondazione Politecnico di Milano”, “Speed Automazione”, “Politecnico di Milano”, “Mediawebview” and “Università Cattaneo – LIUC” teamed up to design an innovative automatic gate for the entrance and exit of container trucks in the Sogemar Spa intermodal terminal in Rho (Milan, Italy). The main objectives can be identified as defining how the automatic gate has to be equipped, and assessing its possible benefits ex ante by the use of simulation. In order to do so, two configurations were mainly considered for the gate: • Alternative 1: one gate, equipped for incoming and outgoing vehicles; • Alternative 2: two gates, one dedicated to incoming vehicles and the other to outgoing ones. Each alternative was modelled by the use of Petri Nets and then implemented in a simulation model using Arena, so that benefits of both were statistically analysed and compared to the current performance of the terminal. Improvements brought by the automatic gates were then used as an input to the Net Present Value (NPV) calculation for each alternative. According to evaluated NPVs, the best alternative is the first, as it provided about a quarter of a million euros NPV in 10 years and a payback period between year 3 and 4. As an additional step to this project, the selected alternative will soon undergo prototyping and installation of the gate in the Sogemar Rho terminal.
