Abstract

The aim of this thesis is the discussion of the possibilities offered by the key enabling technologies, such as RFId and RTLS systems, in the manufacturing field for creating smart factories and more generally in several economic and social aspects. The backbone of the paper consists in the description of my internship experience at the company Tenaris Dalmine S.p.A. The internship has involved me in a consulting project, commissioned by Tenaris to the research laboratory Lab#ID of LIUC University, which primary objective is the localization of pallets in the outdoor storage area. This thesis, after providing a description of the company, discusses the first two main phases of the project, which in total are three: 1) Feasibility Study ( Macro Phase A); 2) Pilot Project (Macro Phase B ) ; 3) Implementation and Training (Macro Phase C). In particular, the thesis describes the study of the scenario (AS- IS) prior to the project and the scenario (TO -BE ) provided at the end of it. Indeed, on the basis of this study, it has been possible to identify the critical process, to identify the best technological solutions and the parts of the process in which they are needed. Later, in the document, there is the description of the technologies used, in particular the functioning logic of the RFId and RTLS systems. Furthermore, the stages concerning the selection of vendor are presented and the first installations of the tracking system, which took place during the Pilot project, are described. Finally, the thesis draws the attention to that future scenarios that lie ahead for Tenaris and it discusses how the technologies used in this project are constantly evolving, envisaging further innovations such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Moreover it is emphasized their importance as the centre of many European Union discussions to give fresh energy to our industry and to our economy. Tenaris Dalmine, improving its efficiency and becoming part of the smart factories, stands on the starting line of manufacturing and technological European progress and springs forward.
