Abstract

The work presents a study on an intermodal maritime container terminal. Especially it focuses on container flow during the operation of unloading and loading trains. In addition, the work studies the movement of container from the Service line, where the operations are made to the main Stacking yard. The main problems during these procedures are: Loading planning, assign each train to a railway track, assign each Trucks (in this work Trailers) a parking position, determinate crane work area, decide on the sequence of container moves per crane and vehicles dispatching problem (VDP). Since the problems and the interaction between the handling equipment inside the terminal are numerous, the study follows with an implementation of a simulation model. The model is developed in Enterprise Dynamics, which is a discrete event simulation tool. Thank to it, it could be possible to implement a two and three dimension visualization. The layout of the model is base on the container terminal di Altenwerdar, Hamburg Germany. All the main problems, existing in unloading and reloading process, were represented in the created model. In addition some of these issues were integrated as different operations strategies, which could be easily changed by the users. This made possible to test different scenarios. Some of these problems are crane schedule or decide on the sequence of container moves per crane, implemented as crane movement strategies and VDP, implemented as trailer priority. In addition the number of two handling equipment, the tractors and the trailers, could be changed. Others problems are modelled by assumptions or by taking the common way to do. They are, loading planning, assign each train to a railway track, determinate crane work area and assign each trucks (in this work trailers) a parking position. The output data monitored, during the simulation run are numerous, such as the process time of train, the crane utilization and the tractor utilization. These data was exanimated by using the main effect charts and the analysis of variance in order to see if the differences between the scenarios have a statistical significant. From the results it was concluded that little different in the train process time in relation of the factors trailer priority are not significant. On the other hand for the other three factors number of tractors, number of trailers and crane strategy, the analysis lead to conclude that they effect the train process time.
