Abstract

The aim of this work is creating a proposal for a master dissertation that analyses the concept of Open Innovation and in particular tries to understand if it is applicable in the energy industry and to which extent. The evidences found in literature regarding the adoption of this paradigm within the energy industry, will be further tested applying the theory into two practical case studies in order to point out differences and similarities in the innovation process of two different companies in two different countries. The work starts stating the aim and objectives of the dissertation in order to clearly point out what findings the author would like to reach and the steps necessary to achieve them. The main body of the proposal is aimed at analysing in depth the concept of Open Innovation, by means of a detailed literature review within the major authors and researchers in this field. This literature review is aimed at pointing out the main characteristic of this new paradigm underlining advantages and disadvantages for companies that may decide to embrace it. This approach has the main objective of understanding if the Open Innovation paradigm could be applied successfully to the energy industry and which advantages can give to the companies operating in this sector. Then, it is provided a brief outlook of the energy industry trying to underline the main drivers that can be taken into account for evaluating the possibility of effectively introducing the Open Innovation approach in a company. In the next section it is analysed the concept of Open Innovation, applied specifically to the energy industry, in order to fully understand if this paradigm is applicable and to which extent. Here, there are provided some evidences, found in literature, that support the idea of adopting the above described paradigm in the industry chosen as one of the main sources of competitive advantage for the future and a measure to face environmental challenges. The research continues analysing in a detailed way the methodology that will be used for performing the secondary and then primary research by means of interviews in the selected companies. Moreover there are analysed the most important research limitations that can affect the outcome of the entire dissertation. The work is concluded analysing the resource requirements for completing the dissertation and the ethical issues related with sources used in this work and data confidentiality, security and diffusion.
