Abstract

The thesis is based on the resolution of production management problems in a small crafting company. The company is called Hjernø and is located in Denmark. It employs around 40 people, and produces moulds for injection moulding machines. The main characteristic of this company is that every single product is produced only once and in one unit. When I started the project, the management was working in a very difficult situation because they managed around 40 products at the same time and all the planning and the management of production was held by only one person that had to take care of all the parts in the production and all the machines. This situation was problematic, and the consequences were a big number of rejected products and late deliveries. The objective of my project was to find new management techniques to be used to improve the performances of the production in order to solve the rejection and late delivery problems. I decided to explore the lean approach to find solutions for this company. Following the lean guidelines I made a deep evaluation and analysis of the situation in the company in order to find the sources of problems and wastes. Later I looked for management tools and techniques that could help solving these problems. At the end, the most important problem sources found were the planning, the cultural change resistance and the product rejection. Since I was working in a very variable situation, was very difficult to use mass production tools and techniques to improve the situation; a big part of the project was in fact focused in finding ways to adapt models to the different kinds of approaches in order to find a solution for the problem as if it was a standardised situation. In general I found that in some situation the lean approach for mass production could be effectively used, while for others I was forced to use project management tools that are designed for non repetitive situations. Anyway the final point was to try to find a way to standardise as much as possible the production in order to have the possibility to make more easily the evaluations and the forecasts also in the future.
