Abstract

INGLESE The topic of this thesis is the supply chain (SC) design, which does not have a complete and shared definition in literature. During our research we read a hundred articles coping with this issue and we selected the most interesting ones according to us; many of them focus on a real case or on a particular industry, confirming that there is not a general definition of what SC design is, what are the steps to follow and how to evaluate the results. According to the most shared literature, we defined the SC design as the problem regarding the need to specify the structure through which products flow from their source points to their demand points. This means deciding the number, location, capacity and structure of the facilities, the selection of suppliers and the definition of the policies for governing the interrelationships among the stages, with the aim of optimizing the SC performance. In order to understand the issue, we described four scenarios combining the situation “new” or “existing” for both the product and the SC, then we proposed a tool that defines the steps that should be followed for the SC design. First of all the designer has to understand which scenario he has to cope with and identify the boundaries and their level in order to individuate the areas where improvements are possible. Then the decision variables and the performance measures must be identified; the performance measures must be chosen in accordance with the strategic goals of the company and they are put in an objective function that usually considers economic aspects such as the maximization of profit or the minimization of costs. Depending on the amount of data available and the requested quality of the solution, optimization, heuristics or simulation model can be used. It would be better to simulate the solution found with the first two models above to find out problems and avoid useless investments. At the end we presented the main aspects driving the SC design: globalization, increase in logistic costs and level of risk, increase of labor cost (also in low-cost countries), sustainability, increased price volatility. These aspects lead to four implications that the designer must consider: the high management risk, a new way of thinking about globalization, the need for visibility and flexibility. We can say that the future successful strategy will be to understand the customers’ needs and then adapt the SC, trying not only to improve but also to foresee the performance.
