Abstract

Nowadays the business environment is becoming more and more demanding because of the markets globalization, resources scarcity and environmental impact. Sustainability is becoming the real challenge that must be faced. This thesis aims at exploring the concept of sustainability, to be considered as a key driver, within the supply chain focusing on the role of the logistics service providers. In order to define the strategic role played by logistics service providers in affecting and pushing supply chains towards eco-efficiency, the issue about logistics innovation is investigated. The strategies currently undertaken by logistics service providers in the eco-efficiency arena are examined. The concept of value creation is combined with environmental issues in order to draw the current business scenario and its evolution over the time. Most of the environmental initiatives currently undertaken by logistics providers are focused on cost savings resulting from better facility management, exploitation of alternative energy sources, more efficient transport, waste reduction, optimised routing and product flow. The strict regulations regarding environmental impact are shaping the rules of the business. Then, green culture is starting to play an important role in the supply chain battlefield and the soft benefits arising from it, such as improved brand image because of the environmental commitment, are factors to be considered. Beside drivers and barriers of environmental initiatives, the measurement system adopted to assess economical and environmental performance is investigated pointing out the most important metrics: costs and savings. The internal resources and the capabilities enhancing a successful implementation are analysed and the organizational structure currently adopted is evaluated in order to draw the potentiality of the logistics providers to drive the whole supply chain towards a more sustainable business.
