The aim of the collection development policy is to establish guidelines for the development of a quality collection to meet educational needs of students and faculty at LIUC as guided by the LIUC mission.

Collection should serve curricular and reserch needs of students, faculty and staff.

At the same time, the exploding production of documents, rising costs and a limited budget require a prudent selection policy. For less frequently used documents, access to remote information resources is an accettable alternative to ownership.

General criteria for selection of library materials

  1. Appropriateness for courses' programs at the University
  2. Documents that meet the reserch and cultural needs of students and faculty
  3. Possibility of use for one more courses
  4. Identified strength of existing collection in a particular subject area (particulary in connection with the reserch programs held in the University)
  5. Permanence, currency and timeliness of the documents
  6. Expected usage (ILL may be a good alternative for occasional needs)
  7. Cost of documents
  8. Critical review (both in periodicals and by faculty's member)

Documents that is adequate to suppot lower level courses

Materials for upper level courses
Current and retrospective monographs, selection of major journals, reference works and bibliographies

d) Advanced

Documents for reserch programms, master degree programms, faculty teaching interests with emphasis on specific subdivisions as required by the discipline
General and specialized monographs, critical and analitical studies, reference works, bibliographies and appropriate journals

Language

The library acquires documents mainly in Italian (45%), English(40%) and French (10%). Major emphasis is placed on Italian basic books.

Geographic and chronologic

Italy and Europe are privileged; the United States receive special attention; acquisitions on East Asia have been growing since 1996.

Library acquires any available document on economic conditions of Varese province.

Primary emphasis is on contempory materials. Some history of business and economic thougtht is acquired.
