Sommario

Abstract

This paper deals with the problem of the means that are available for analysing the relationship between a business and its relevant external environment. As a starting point it can be reasonably assumed that a firm is an open social system whose duty is to transform goods and services into ones whose value is considered to be superior to that which was introduced during the transformation process. The borders of a firm are basically not fixed, and the firm's capacity to operate within the system is variable. Its vulnerability is a constant worry and its administration is influenced by expectations which are the results of forecasts that may or may not be difficult to make and are conditioned by wishful thinking. The following four instruments for analysing the relationship between a firm and its external environment have been taken into consideration: - The impact matrix - An analysis of vulnerability - The life cycle of the sector - Forecasting methods, with particular reference to scenarios.
